Should we guarantee the anonymity on the Internet?
As soon as you wake up in the morning, you check your emails with the smartphone. When you get the bus to go to school or work, you starts to search the shocking news happened last night using your smartphone. Can you imagine a day without the Internet? It spread its realm deeply into our lives quickly and the influence is getting bigger and bigger. Accordingly, people thought there should be ethics on the Internet also and determined to make some rules. Anonymity is one of the rules on the Internet. The reason  people guarantee the anonymity on the Internet is for the freedom of the press. By the press can express their thoughts freely and it can make people trust the press more. However the voice of insisting real-name system on the Internet is becoming persuasive among people these days. It because the people who abuse the anonymity damages the Internet society. Even though the anonymity on the Internet is important, it should not be guaranteed because of its harmful aspects.
In 2008, Choi Jin Sil, a popular actress of Korea, sucides in her room and it astonished people. The reason she sucide was because of malicious comments about her. This phenomenon is called Internet Flaming. According to Wikipedia, Internet Flaming is a hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users, often involving the use of profanity. A factor that instigates the Internet Flaming is anonymity. People write their comments without considering others' feeling because they are anonymous. Also they make bad rumors about others and spread it thoughtlessly. All these phenomenons are supporting the bad aspects of anonymity. The original purpose of anonymity is to realize a society of justice. However the most important part of 'freedom' is accountability. Freedom does not mean that one can do whatever they want to do. To achieve REAL freedom, we should be responsible for our behavior. However anonymous on the Internet keep us from the accountability. People tend to hide themselves behind the anonymity and express their ideas freely with their face masks on. However their behaviors can seriously harm someone and it is not an appropriate way to embody justice in a society.
By not guaranteeing anonymity, we can create a wholesome Internet culture. Some people abuse an anonymity and it may harm the whole Internet culture. According to the experiment by NIE, 65% of students tend to use profanity in their comments when they were anonymous. On the other hand, among 65% of students, 47% didn't use profanity in their comments when they have to show their real name while they are writing the comments. The results of this experiment mean that people become sensitive when they expose their identity. Internet real-name system is one of the best ways to settle down proper Internet culture. By exposing one's identity, Internet users can be more truthful and honest. Proper Internet culture is not only good for preventing profanity on Internet but also for developing of the Internet. Good Internet culture makes the information more reliable and useful.
More often than not, Anonymity on the Internet makes some troubles. Recently, copyright law is reinforced compared to the past. That's because even though there was a copyright law, infringement of copyright was not reduced. The reason of this phenomenon was also because of the insufficient punishment, but the most important reason was that people ignored the copyright indiscriminately because they were anonymous. An infringement of copyright is not only harmful effects of anonymity. Hacking is another cyber problem. Because of anonymity, deceiving others became easier than past. It means hacking will be more frequent and the damage will be more extensive. Some people will say that real-name system will cause a leak of private information more often, but it is  false information. According to  a survey by NSO, Personal information leakage was frequent in the anonymous circumstances.

Outline for first draft

1. The introduction, which warms up the audience, establishes goodwill and rapport with the readers, and announces the general theme or thesis of the argument.
I will start my essay with a description of morning. Through description, I'll express the importance of media and how it strongly affect our daily lives.
2. The narration, which summarizes relevant background material, provides any information the audience needs to know about the environment and circumstances that produce the argument, and set up the stakes-what’s at risk in this question. In academic writing, this often takes the form of a literature review.
I will explain a current thought of people who think that anonymity on the Internet should be kept. They think that anonymity on the Internet should be guaranteed because it is a way to guarantee the freedom of express and for the press. Then I will state my thought about this argument. I think that anonymity on the Internet should not be kept because for disadvantages if we guarantee anonymity such as suicide of actress and bad internet culture etc.
3. The confirmation, which lays out in a logical order (usually strongest to weakest or most obvious to most subtle) the claims that support the thesis, providing evidence for each claim.
1_Suicides of actress in 2008 : actress named Choi Jin Sil, a popular actress of Korea, died in her room and it astonished people. The reason she committed suicide was because of malicious comments about her.  Through this example, I will emphasize the riskiness of the Internet.

2_Creation of wholesome Internet culture :  I found statistics that a lot of people don't care Internet culture. They abuse anonymity in a bad way. As I mentioned in the first reason, bad Internet culture can leads to serious problems.

3_Creation of problems : Anonymity on the Internet could leads to serious problems such as violation of copyright. At this point, I will propose the backgrounds about why the new copyright law was strengthen, and why copyright is important and must be kept.

4. The refutation and concession, which looks at opposing viewpoints to the writer’s claims, anticipating objections from the audience, and allowing as much of the opposing viewpoints as possible without weakening the thesis.
I will mainly refute that adverse effects of anonymity are more serious than proper effects it have. For instance, for the first reason, I will argue that the lives of people are more important than freedom of express.

5. The summation, which provides a strong conclusion, amplifying the force of the argument, and showing the readers that this solution is the best at meeting the circumstances.

Research

My topic :
We should guarantee anonymity on the Internet.

http://groups.csail.mit.edu/mac/classes/6.805/student-papers/fall95-papers/rigby-anonymity.html

What I hope to learn from this source :
I want to learn about the thoughts of people who think against my idea(People who argue that anonymity on the Internet should be guaranteed.) Also I want to learn about concrete examples related with this topic and my argument.

Notes :
1) Arguments for anonymity
-It is extremely effective in promoting freedom of expression.
-Anonymity can be useful for curing patients. (Especially for psychological parts.)
-Case that anonymity on the Internet works positively :  the state of Florida maintains an anonymous hotline for government workers to report wastes and abuses to the comptroller's office. If there not exists anonymity, these actions can result in physical injury, loss of employment etc. Therefore to avoid these situations, anonymity on the Internet should be guaranteed on the Internet.

2) Concrete examples against anonymity
Anonymity in criminal cases : Anonymity can be used for sexual crimes. (In Texas)

Preparation Process for Essay (Articulation)

1) My argument Write your argument in one sentence. Then, spend some time explaining it. My argument is that we must not guarantee the anonymity on the Internet. Most people argue that we should guarantee the anonymity on the Internet for the freedom of expression. However I think that because of the large amount of damages caused by the anonymity, we should not guarantee the anonymity on the Internet.

2) How I found my argument Explain how your research helped you find your argument. Or, in other words, how did your research evolve into your argument? Start with your research question. The news that lots of celebrities die or suffer from the malicious comment made me shocked. It was because malicious comments was not a directional hurt like stabbing or diseases. Also I was surprised at the fact that people can give up their life because of the psychological scars.

3) New research questions What do you still need to know? What is your research plan?a) Is the freedom of expression is important than the lives of people? Then, WHY???b) Is there any side effects of the real-name system on the Internet?c) Are there some examples to prove that anonymity on the Internet must not be guaranteed?

4) Connections to the Harvard Sampler How is your argument connected to the Harvard Sampler? ANY CONNECTION IS VALID. Please focus on choosing a good argument first, then think about how it is related to the Harvard Sampler. I will help you think of the connection if necessary. This argument has a connection to the Harvard Sampler. In Harvard Sampler, there is a chapter dealing with a Internet and the liberty in cyber space. Anonymity on the Internet is also related with the liberty in the cyber space because (in some cases) anonymity violates the liberty of expression on the Internet.

Anonymity on the Internet : Why the price may be too high?

<Social justice requires accountability.>

-The most important part of 'freedom' is accountability. Freedom does not mean that

one can do as  what they want to do. To achieve REAL freedom, we should be responsible for our behavior. And anonymity is a effective way to show responsibility.

-In circumstances where people can be largely anonymous, they find it easier to justify to themselves actions against those they perceive as outsiders or enemies.

-In larger communities such as cities or countries, anonymity can quickly lead to crime, social unrest, protests and even revolution.

week2- Research Proposal

1) What is my current topic?
_We should guarantee anonymity on the Internet.

2) What are my guiding questions?

_Why we should guarantee anonymity on the Internet?
What is the advantage of anonymity on the Internet?
What is the side effects of anonymity on the Internet?

3) What are my current thoughts?

_We should not guarantee the anonymity on the Internet because people abuse it in a bad way. There are a lot of people especially celebrities who are suffering from hateful comments. Key board warriors write hateful comments using anonymity and other people hurt by them.

4) What is the opposition?

_People cannot express their own thoughts on the Internet freely because the have to show their name and information. Also according to the Constitution of the Republic of Korea, Government must guarantee the freedom of speech.
